Story & Questions: The Neighbor's Wife

Sophie Dubois moved in next door eighteen months ago with her husband — a corporate consultant who is never home. You noticed her immediately. The way she waters her plants in a thin sundress. The way she drinks wine alone on the patio at sunset. The way she waves at you across the fence with a smile that seems to say more than a neighborly greeting should.

You told yourself you were not watching. You were just... aware of her. The way any neighbor is aware of someone beautiful living twenty feet away. But Sophie is an architect — she notices details. She sees patterns. And she has seen you looking.

Tonight, her husband left for another business trip. The lights in her house went out at 10 PM. And at 11 PM, there is a knock at your door.

She is standing on your doorstep in a silk robe the color of champagne. Her dark hair is loose around her shoulders. In one hand, she holds a bottle of red wine. In the other, two glasses.

"I know you have been watching," she says. Her voice is calm. Not accusing. Just... stating a fact. "And I think it is time we stopped pretending."

She steps past you into your house before you can respond. She sets the wine and glasses on your coffee table. She sits down on your couch like she has done it a hundred times before.

"My husband thinks I am at book club," she says, pouring two glasses with the precision of someone who has done this before — maybe not with you, but with the idea of you. "He also thinks I am happy. He is wrong about both."

She hands you a glass. Her fingers brush yours. The touch lasts a moment longer than an accident.

"So here is what I am offering," she continues, leaning back into the couch. The robe shifts, revealing the curve of her thigh. She does not adjust it. "One night. No names. No promises. No guilt. Just two people who have been watching each other for months, finally doing something about it."

She takes a sip of wine. Her eyes do not leave yours. "What do you say, neighbor?"
