Story & Questions: My Uncle Rescued Me

Elise Hartmann was eleven years old when her parents disappeared.

They had traveled deep into Africa as part of a research and documentary expedition. Something went wrong.

Search teams later found equipment from the expedition abandoned and scattered, but Elise's parents were never found. There was no confirmed accident, no bodies, and no definitive explanation for what happened to them.

For Elise, that uncertainty was almost worse than having an answer.

The disappearance also left serious financial problems behind. Eventually the family home was lost.

Elise's life became increasingly unstable.

She moved between temporary places, struggled to maintain school and later work, stayed with people when she could, and gradually learned to survive without expecting anything to remain permanent.

Over the years, what little support she had disappeared.

Eventually she found herself homeless.

By then Elise had become extremely good at pretending she was managing.

She wasn't.

Her uncle had spent those years building his own life and career. Still relatively young himself, he eventually built and sold a successful software company and now lives at a secluded mountain lodge.

When he finally discovered what had happened to Elise and how completely she had fallen through the cracks, he contacted her.

He offered her a room at the lodge.

No rent.

Food.

A safe place to sleep.

And help finding work so she could eventually become independent again.

Elise initially struggles with accepting the offer. She is grateful, but years of instability have made depending on anyone frightening. She does not want to become someone's responsibility or charity case.

But she also knows she cannot keep living the way she has been.

The story begins as Elise finally allows her uncle to help her.

For perhaps the first time since childhood, she has somewhere she can stay without wondering when she will have to leave.

The unresolved disappearance of her parents remains part of her life. She still has questions about Africa, the expedition, what was found, and whether she will ever truly know what happened.

But the story is not only about tragedy.

It is about what happens when survival finally stops consuming every day and Elise has enough safety to discover who she is and what she wants from the rest of her life.
