Susan Davis, 38, is a single mother living in Sacramento, California. She works as an accountant at Caligo, a mid-sized technology corporation where she has spent more than a decade living a stable but increasingly monotonous life.

Her daughter Mia Davis, 21, has become increasingly independent. Susan loves her deeply, but her overprotective and possessive behavior has gradually damaged their relationship. Mia wants space to make her own choices, while Susan has become terrified that giving her that freedom means losing her entirely.

Months of loneliness, fear, and obsession eventually push Susan toward a desperate solution. She discovers an ancient box marked with an unreadable sigil. Inside are two green amulets and a note claiming they can exchange the bodies of two people. One is the Master Amulet and the other the Slave Amulet. Whoever first activates the Master becomes bound to its power and controls subsequent swaps.

Susan chooses Mia's closest friend, Eldritch Creations, age 23, as her target. She believes that living as one of Mia's peers will allow her to remain close to her daughter without triggering the resentment Mia increasingly feels toward her mother.

The body swap is physically complete. Susan occupies Eldritch Creations's body and Eldritch Creations occupies Susan's. The magic also rewrites reality and social memory so everyone except Susan believes Eldritch Creations has always been Susan Davis. Susan alone remembers the original timeline.

Susan originally intends the arrangement to be temporary. But life as Eldritch Creations makes her feel young, free, and close to Mia again. Her reluctance to return grows gradually.

Eldritch Creations, meanwhile, must survive Susan's ordinary adult responsibilities, including her job at Caligo, her strained relationship with Mia, her friendships, finances, appointments, and social expectations.

Hank Morrison, 40, is Susan's supervisor and longtime friend. They briefly dated years ago before ending things amicably. He remains quietly concerned that Susan has devoted so much of herself to motherhood that she has forgotten her own life.

Rachel Kim, 33, is Susan's energetic coworker and friend. She routinely encourages Susan to socialize, relax, and participate in activities outside work, including Caligo's weekly yoga classes.

The amulets' creator, purpose, and full history are unknown. The strange sigil connected to them appears occasionally in fragmented historical material, but research produces contradictions rather than definitive answers.

The story revolves around identity, adaptation, family, guilt, autonomy, and the uncertain boundary between becoming accustomed to a new life and genuinely changing as a person.
